South African photojournalist Brent Stirton, renowned for his work with National Geographic , has released a remarkable book: Virunga . This book pays tribute to Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a unique UNESCO World Heritage site. It is both a sanctuary for mountain gorillas and other endangered species, and an area constantly exposed to armed conflict and ecological threats.
A unique testimony
This book is the culmination of 15 years of work and 13 expeditions by Brent Stirton to one of the world's most challenging territories. It contains poignant images: gorillas in their natural habitat, orphaned gorillas being cared for by their keepers, rangers on missions, and even somber scenes following the tragic deaths of some iconic animals. Each photograph tells a story, a blend of wild beauty and harsh reality.
Between danger and resilience
Virunga is also the story of the men and women who risk their lives to defend biodiversity. More than 240 rangers have been killed in twenty years protecting this territory. But beyond this violence, the book highlights solutions for the future : green energy, sustainable agriculture, and local initiatives for communities. Virunga National Park thus emerges as a possible model of coexistence between nature and human development.
Why read it?
Virunga is not just a photo book. It is a visual record , a call to protect nature , and a tribute to those who risk their lives for the future of gorillas and the planet.
Virunga is an essential book for photography, environment and conservation enthusiasts.
